It is a sad reality that some parents still refuse to acknowledge the gender of their child. This is the case for one mother who has refused to identify whether her child was born male or female. Instead, she has chosen to raise the child as ‘anti-gender’. This is a harmful and misguided ideology that can have serious consequences for the child’s mental health and wellbeing.
It is important to understand that gender is not a choice, nor is it something that can be changed or suppressed. Gender identity is a deeply ingrained aspect of our being, and denying a child the right to identify with their true gender can lead to confusion, anxiety, and depression. It can also have long-term effects on their social and emotional development.
Furthermore, the concept of ‘anti-gender’ is not only harmful but also nonsensical. Gender is not a binary construct, and there are many different ways in which people can identify (think of hermaphroditism). To deny someone their gender identity is to deny them their very existence.
As a society, it is our responsibility to ensure that all children are given the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from harmful ideologies and beliefs. We must work towards a future where all individuals are respected and celebrated for who they are, regardless of their gender identity.
