Dear readers. Last night there was a powerful earthquake, the strongest in decades, in Morocco, which hits very close to home for me. I’m originally from Morocco, and my heart is heavy with concern for my fellow Moroccans right now.

My thoughts are with my homeland, my people, and all those affected by this natural disaster.

The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, shook Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range late on a Friday night. Imagine the fear and uncertainty that must have gripped the hearts of the people as the ground beneath them trembled. It’s a situation none of us would wish to experience.

Over 2800 people have lost their lives, and hundreds more are injured. Families have been torn apart, homes reduced to rubble, and entire communities left in ruins. It’s a heartbreaking scene that’s hard to bear.

For my fellow Moroccans, this is a tragedy of immense proportions. The last time something like this happened was in 2004, when another earthquake claimed the lives of many. But even that pales in comparison to the devastating earthquake in 1960 that struck Agadir, taking the lives of at least 12,000 people.
